JOB SUMMARY

In accordance with district policies and procedures, the High School Theatre Arts Instructor/Director will be in charge of developing and implementing the Theatre Arts program for Bartlesville High School. The Theatre Arts program is a very active program designed to develop respect for the arts in society and to train those who will become the actors and technicians of the future. The Theatre Arts Instructor/Director will produce and direct one main stage production per semester, one Black Box production each semester and one musical each year (a total minimum of 5 productions).  The Instructor/Director will, in addition to his/her salary, receive additional Extra Duty compensation for production work performed outside of regular contract hours.

 The information contained in this job description is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position.  Additional duties are performed by the individual holding this position and additional duties may be assigned. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

-Teach a minimum of 5 classes per school day (currently 3 acting courses and 2 stagecraft courses, though course assignment may vary slightly).

-Develop and maintain challenging curriculum to ensure student achievement (Acting courses are taken by students for 4 years and Stagecraft courses for 2 years – curriculum must offer growth and each level).

-Design and conduct recruitment/outreach programs to attract new theatre participants.

-Teach acting theories, principles and techniques to individuals and groups, including early Greek acting theories through contemporary theories such as those of Uta Hagen, Michael Chekov and others.

-Assign and evaluate student performance on a regular basis – providing verbal and written critiques to students. 

-Teach enunciation, diction, voice development, and stage dialects.

-Discuss and demonstrate vocal and body expression to teach acting styles, character development, and personality projection.

-Assist students wishing to continue the study of theatre at the collegiate or professional level by assisting in networking, application and audition processes.

-Teaches basic construction skills, shop safety, proper use of hand and power tools, scenic painting and technical theatre skills related to light, sound, projection and stage rigging.  Give students opportunities to demonstrate these skills both in the classroom and in the production environment.  Provide opportunities for students to accept managerial positions in the theatre, such as stage management and house management.

-Supervise students performing production tasks, such as constructing, painting, moving scenery; managing properties and costuming; operating stage lighting and sound equipment; and operating the stage counter-weight system.

-Provide expertise of a fly rigging system; provide expertise in all areas of lighting design and execution for theater, dance and music; program intelligent lighting and conventional fixtures using ETC Expression 3 and Emphasis/WYSIWYG 3D systems and the Ion Lighting Control System.

-The Instructor/Director will use class time for direct instruction.  Rehearsal for all play productions will be conducted outside of class time in order to maintain high academic expectations and continual student learning.  (Productions are where students may apply what they learn in class.)

 

 PRODUCTION RESPSONSIBILITIES

Selects script for production and ensure all appropriate royalties and fees are paid;  audition students to select casts and assign roles; develop and adhere to a rehearsal schedule; rehearses actors and technical theatre students to ensure successful productions; create and adhere to rehearsal schedules; accept responsibility for all design (lighting, costume, scenic ,properties, sound, etc.) and technical aspects; secures and reserves rehearsal and performance facilities with building administration; oversees proper organization and storage of stock theatrical units and school-owned equipment and material on the high school stage, in the auditorium, and in the theatre classroom; supervises all publicity and programs for productions; organizes ticket sales and house management (including securing ushers); establish performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, and verifies each student’s eligibility to participate in theatre activities; performers other duties necessary to the success of a production.

-Maintain student activity account and make all deposits and expenditures in an accurate and timely fashion.

-Organize and implement theatre trips in accordance with district policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability.  Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.

- Ensure the safety of students by adhering to safe practices for the stage safety and general school rules and regulations while on Bartlesville School District premises and when traveling.

-Maintain scene shop tools, theatrical equipment and stock scenery pieces in good working order and request replacements as needed through building principals and Fine Arts Center Manager.

- Work cooperatively with other Fine Arts faculty members and the Fine Arts Center Manager.

- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

-Regular supervision of students both inside and outside the traditional classroom as individuals, small and large groups.

-Supervise parent and community volunteers.

 

 

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION

-Bachelor of Science degree is the minimum required education level

-Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate in Speech and Theatre. 

 Demonstrate expertise in knowledge and teaching of Theatre Arts, including literary analysis, acting, voice, dance, movement, theatrical design and technical aspects of theatre

-Minimum of 5 years teaching experience and/or involvement in professional theatre is preferred

  8. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  9. Ability to use independent judgment and demonstrates initiative to act without being asked.

 The demands of an extended workday (rehearsals, events, etc.) require a high level of physical endurance.
